Need advice on adding large schools of fish

Postby iamavikbagh » Mon Mar 20, 2017 2:09 pm

Hello friends,

I have been setting up a 5x2x1.5 feet freshwater aquarium for a couple of weeks now. It is still cycling at the moment. I am hoping to have it completely cycled in a few more weeks.

It is semi-planted (5 banana lilies, some java fern, and some amazon frogbit), with a couple large driftwood pieces for decor. All plants are doing well, although the needle-leaf java fern has not really showing much growth yet. I have been doing a fish-in cycling with some hardy species like platies and guppies. Everybody seems healthy and kicking so far.

I don't have the space for a sump, and therefore have had to settle for a Eheim 2217 canister filter, which has been running non-stop.

Once cycled, I plan to add schooling fish to this setup. I want to get a large group of Horadandia Brittani (possibly 30-50), and about 12-18 cardinal tetras. But, I am nervous about whether adding schools that large in size, could potentially shock the tank and cause an ammonia spike. If that is a real possibility, how do you experts suggest I do it? I figured those of you who have kept/keeps large schools must have tackled this issue someway or another? Kindly advise me on how to do it. Also, what kind of growth rate should I expect from the java fern? Seems kinda slow as of now :)

Admins/Moderators, please feel free to move this thread to the appropriate forum, if "Aquarium Science" is not the right one for this topic.

A couple of leaves have turned dark brown. Rest of the plant seems green and lush. Should I cut out the brown leaves or let them turn into mulm, so that the plant can feed on it?

Not sure about the age. But this is what it looks like. It has been with me for about 2 weeks.

You can also add neon tetras...they are smaller than cardinals and look awesome!

Personally I like the look of the cardinals more. Neons could also do.

But how do I add the school? Do I add the whole school all at once? Won't that cause an ammonia spike? I have a 10 gallon sitting empty. So I could try keeping them there and adding a few from amongst them to the main tank every 3-4 days, but I am afraid a 10 gallon won't be enough space to house them all even for a few days. Any ideas?
