Tank glass crack

Postby Zeeshan » Thu Jan 05, 2017 6:49 pm

Hi friends

I noticed today that one of my smaller tank had a crack on its glass in the right side. This is a spare tank so it was empty but I do use it at times as a hospital tank. I am not sure how this happened; I am attaching a picture of the damaged portion, please see and let me know if it is still safe to fill up the tank with water.

But as you can see in the pic, the crack is right towards the bottom of the tank, filling water till that level will be of no help :(

It doesnt seem that the crack will extend with just the lateral pressure of water.
Unless further vibration or damaging force is applied to it,it should hold.

Chances of leak are there,so you could use a sealant which will also act as a binding material.

What I have personally done before for partial cracks(not in aquariums)
Is buy a feviquick.then touch the nozzle to the crack and slightly press it..a drop will come out and get sucked inside the crack by capillary effect.
Run the nozzle like this along the entire length of the crack.
Do it on both sides.

It really will strengthen it..

Then,to be double sure,apply a sealant.

Then let everything dry.

Put in water normally..as you would..

Preferably do it near a basin/bathroom.

Fill it up fully and leave it like that for 2 to 3 days to determine microleaks and that if the crack extends.

Only then can you be 100% sure its fine..

Then use it as normal..

I have tried it on far thinner glass and it works.
Good luck.
