planted tank soil help

Postby shaikh » Sun Jan 22, 2017 4:24 pm

hello,

I am planning to build my first planted tank,

I have a 3X1X1 tank
i have bought the control soil 9ltr merfield brand.
I came to know about ADA brand after buying control soil.now i am confuse is this a good brand or i have to add fertiliser now ?
and I assume 9ltr is not enough for my 3ft tank, so can i cadd some other soil (like soilright) to save cost ?
as i am newbie i want to go easy on plant and lights.and for now i am planning to use DIY c02 or tablets

please help me here on soil part , i am open to all solution as i have bought soil only as of now.
Thanks

First change your tank. The existing tank will be tough to handle as a beginner planted tank.

Contro is wastage of money. So better you invest on ADA Aquasoil or Genesis or Black Earth.

I started off just like you around the same time (05-Feb). I brought ADA aquarium soil 9 ltr online (indianaquarium.com) for around 1975/-
I have planted two plants - cryptocoryne lucens and rotala wellichii.
I also have java moss placed on the two stones I brought online (easypets.in).
Thought of keeping driftwood also but it would have become more congested.
I feel it is important to understand the nitrogen cycle of a tank and the use of filter media is important.
I brought filter media and CO2 tablets from the store to provide some growth to the plants.
Wendii crypt is growing well but the other mid-ground plant and java moss are not responding properly.
I am currently looking for some fertilizer that can bring back the java moss and mid-ground plant back on track.

UPDATE: CO2 tablets lowers pH suddenly and does not dissolve completely. It leaves lot of residue. Hence, replaced it with Seachem Flourish Excel. Brought 10 fishes - 6 neon tetras and 4 surfer/silver-tip tetras.

Planted tank is just maintaining underwater ecosystem in a tank, so first you have to think about the natural requirements of the plants and to supply in right proportion. plants you r going to introduce are always better to study before plantation. Now rest of the equipment like filter, light, flow maker, CO2, fert, etc. You have to pick right things. And main thing dosing, so its my suggestion go for small tank, learn the thing practically and then invest on big setup.

Java moss really respond well to CO2 tablets. That is what I observed in my tank.
My Moss was also not growing initially and they had very dull brownish colour. After I added few CO2 tablets, they started responding well.
