a few queries-beginners tank

Postby KingshukPC » Fri Dec 30, 2016 8:24 am

I hope I can get it to work.. my relatively small aquarium..
its a cylindrical barrel type, 1 feet diameter, 1.5 feet in height
holds about 28liters of water..just shy of 10g.

its currently cycling.

I plan to eventually keep these:

1 betta
or
6 zebra
or
4 penguin tetra
or
6 cardinal tetra
or
6 tiger barbs

I know I wont be able to keep many, its a small tank..so the above options are individual options, not together at a time.

its got 2 plastic plants.. leafy.. with hiding spots
has a UGF filter..air pump driven

I also installed a sobo 100f power filter (may be an overkill)

it has a heater and thermometer ( kept at about 27 degrees now)

a cfl light above.

I add water after a zeolite iron remover process, the water is moderately hard with a pH 7. I use rid-all anti chlorine also.

a few of my queries is:

1) have a selected the correct fish and in correct numbers?
2) I plan to do 25% water changes per week, will that be enough
3) if i push it a little, can i keep, 1 betta and 6 zebra ( i read from tims tropical, that they are compatible)
4) do I need to run the UGF all the time. ( what about the power filter)
5) is it a good practice to give a m.blue dip to fishes from LFS before adding to main tank..( after acclimatizing) and what is the process and concentration of meth blue to be achieved and for how long)
6) Is it a good idea to add plain salt as a general tonic ( i heard it probably helps to combat nitrite toxicity better)
6) i have rid-all general add, do i add it to main tank.. unlike the meth blue..which although the lfs said to add, but I know it should never be done..but as for general aid, I think the contents will not re-cycle the tank.
7)is the temperature set correct? do I really need a cooler for summer months. (also, with no filter, the circulation is not there, so the water is more warm near the heater than the rest..is it ok?)

thank you..

thank you..

1) 1 betta fr 28 L is a too much overkill... 5g to a betta is gud enough...other options r fine imo
2) make it 50%
3) try nd c....1st hand exp is d best way to proceed
4) get rid of the ugf...it out dated and highly prone to messup d tank...ipf also shld b removed fr d tank size...use d smallet top filter fr the tank or make a diy one using d ipf's head
5) Study abt fish quarantine.
6) no...what u heard may b abt epsom salt or rock salt...not NaCl...add a few live plants like amazon swords to absorb d nitrates...remove d plastic plants
7)never add any medicines in d tank unless fishes r ill
8) chk the species profile and their habitat temp...keep the temp in accordance to that, cooler is nt reqd unless u want to keep smthing v delicate to warmer temps. Chillers cost huge and so does their electricity consumptions

i hope this helps :)

Thanks so much for the informative reply.. (where is the thanks button?)

rock salt to basically 'bit noon?'

Live plants need more care and experience.. I'm starting out.. So will try those later in a bigger aquarium

I don't have a separate hospital/quarantine tank.. Is there any alternative?

Are UGF s really non functional? People seem to have very mixed opinions.. From what i read around..

Yes

Dont worry so much abt the plants, jst add thm...if they die, replace them...and if they deteriorate, chk the symptoms and research on them on google, you will get to understand the basic things dat a plant need. Dont worry, I too have killed a lot of plants :P
And still cant grow all plants well...so just jump in...dont b afraid of the unknown future.

You can use plastic buckets and tumblers. size according to fish size and count

it works bt cleaning it is like nearly recycling the tank again...it makes a whole lot of mess...

Ok, will try out plants then
Can you recommend Hardy beginner plants?
Can they be simply planted in small gravel?
Where to get them?(galiff street is a bit too far..)

Can you please point me towards good reliable links for studying about fish quarrantine?

UGF , doesnt regular siphoning maintain it? Is cleaning the gravel thoroughly neccessary(and hence recycling)?

go fr amazon swords and val...polysperma
yes, but they wont survive
Galiff is d only place I know to find them as of now

Link- i have to check

UGF-no, lots of debris get underneath where siphoning wont probably work...

Can you also point me towards sites which offer reliable info about fishes,
I have a number of apps, looked around in wiki, tims tropical, fishlore etc

Because I am getting conflicting data
For example, the temperature range

As I said,I planned to keep betta and zebra together

On tims,they are compatible

But elsewhere,it says temp profile doesnt match..the zebras are 18 to 24
Betta is 24 to 28
Surely someone will be uncomfortable then.
Likewise for Cardinal tetra
Some say it will do fine in neutral pH and mildly hard water..while some say it definitelt needs soft and acidic(like neons..)

I also have a centigrade mercury thermometer to cross check the in tank readings.. apparently they are not that accurate now that I tested :|

Also, can I measure water hardness by myself? And device?

I found that There are some electrical devices which measure the electrical conductivity and give an approximation of the hardness in ppm

Anyone use them?
Are they reliable?
