Shrimp breeding problem - HELP !!

Shrimp breeding problem - HELP !!

Postby pulsarabhi » Sat Jul 18, 2015 4:06 am

I have been trying to get my cherry shrimps to breed since 2-3 months but no success. They seem to get berried alright and then I see discarded eggs with the molts :( there have been at least 7-8 berried females but I see no baby shrimps :(

What do you think is wrong here?

Few facts about my tank:
1. 2.5g planted tank with java moss, crypts, and pelia moss
2. Small HOB for filtration
3. Have one otocinclus and 20-25 assassin snails
4. Use tap water treated with seachem prime, weekly 50% water changes
5. Feed tetra bits and algae wafers twice a week
6. No ferts, no co2 only 6 hours of photo period from a 3w led bulb.

Please help me understand what I am doing wrong here.

Well Abhi, some time shrimps drops eggs which are not properly inseminated.

Red cherry are among the most hardiest shrimps, but still can you check the water parameters.

Bangalore have quite varied tap water, in South Bangalore tap water is best whereas in North and East Bangalore tap water is worst!

Thanks Abhi, but I've been having this batch for a while but still no babies :( The guy I get it from charges me Rs. 250 for 25 cherries. I am now getting a feeling these cherries are very low grade that are incapable of breeding. Is that even possible?

Can be a possibility, do mix some other rcs with them and see what happens.

is the filter inlet covered by nets? If not, do it immediately.

If you have dense moss, they sometime hide there for long.
Thanks,

Remove those A. Snails asap. I am also sufferer for these beautiful unpredictable inverts with my RCS colony.

@abhisek - yes, got a fresh batch of cherries and some wood shrimp today, fingers crossed :)
@nilotpal - yes, got that already
@someshdas - now that's something I missed, that is worth a try. Although I make sure the assassins are always fed with tetra bits and algae wafers, but I can't deny them snacking on the cherries :(

Thanks everybody :)

Along with 20-25 A. Snails???.......Best of luck bro! It would b my pleasure rather than anyone, if u get success. FYI, for emergency I shifted my 2 adult A. Snails into my nano RCS tank for 1+ month & even my existing shrimlets vanished within 2-3 days & remain fryless during this time period. Though I never able to catch the culprit but same question arose in my mind as yours. Then after googled regarding compatibility, got this point. Aftr removing those 2, got immediate results without any issue(means keeping HOB & small IP filter uncovered, even without WC for several days). As this species r really very hardy, thus easy to keep & breed without any external effort ...... Believe it!
Thanks & regards

That's some great info, thanks for sharing your experience!! I will do the same, will move all assassins and try. I always thought shrimps are too fast for these snails, guess I was terribly wrong :(
