Hello everyone, newbie here in older age :p

Postby KingshukPC » Fri Dec 30, 2016 8:05 am

hello,
let me introduce myself here.

I am Kingshuk, I am from kasba area.

I want to share with you a story here.

I started off my interest in fishkeeping years back( more like fishdumping-crowding now that I think of it), possibly 10 years back.
I have an aquarium, which is a vertical cylindrical type...it was given as a gift.( its primarily a ornamental side table actually)
anyhow, it measures 1 feet in diameter and 1.5 feet in height.. holds about 28 liters of water.

back then i was super-excited with it.. had absolutely no idea about the intricacies of fishkeeping, and as a result, my fishes died pretty soon.

I didn't have any access to internet back then, so couldn't "read around" or get professional help either.( and the LFS ..well, you can understand)
now that we have the power of internet, and wonderful forums like this, and after gaining a fair bit of knowledge from digging around.. I realized what went wrong.
I will not list the things I did wrong, which is everything really..

thing is, my mollies even gave a fry batch in those adverse conditions.. and obviously all of them died..

eventually I was pretty traumatized ( I am a bit soft hearted when it comes to any living thing..even plants).. that I gave up and forgot about the whole thing.. and bore a bit of guilt feeling and pain all through these years..
but life became quite busy after that, and I couldn't invest time in it anymore..

eventually, I got married, and after settling a bit with both life and career, my wife encouraged me to take up this again..

but I was determined, that this time I will learn as much as possible before playing with the lives of the beautiful creatures.

this time I will do right by them and hopefully they will live out their full lives happily.

so here goes to the reboot and a second shot..

now I know, the kind of aquarium i have is pretty small.. the smallest in fact for a hobby, and the shape is not ideal either for beginners.

but I also read around the basic minimum that can be done even with these..

I am prepared to do the increased frequency of maintenance tasks..
its currently cycling..I intend to add fishes after about 6 to 7 weeks from the start of cycling..

I do have a few queries though.. even after going through as much as i could for the last 2 months.. which I will post in a separate thread, as this is just a intro thread..

I can also post a pic of what i set up if any one you is interested..
I am just feeling thankful, that I have got access to such an wonderful forum now, who are more acquainted with the local conditions and have loads of experience i can share..

hope it goes well, wish me luck

thank you..

Thanks...
Yes I love it too..

My mother bought this, she is very creative

But now, only after I gained a bit of knowledge..I have come to know, that the possibilities are quite limited in this type of tank..

But I am trying to make the best of it.

About the top filter,
This has a air intake pipe, and I have attached a flow valve to it,
Sure it reduces the bubbles, but also greatly reduces flow..

Can it be utilized like that?

Also,I can make a attachment for the outflow,a bar sprinkler basically

That will decrease any turbulence and still filter

Can I do that instead of buying a top filter?
( As you can see, it is kind of small for a top filter to be put in there..and also there is the prebuilt Lid..

Do not add too many fish , may be 2 zebra danios at most, there is no space for fish there , its good you are cycling it, you can also add, seachem purigen as it will take out organic waste which will be a big problem in such a small tank ....

But just a few points as you mention you are very determined to start a fresh and succeed ...

1)The bigger the tank the better ... i suggest 29 gallon min.

2)Try and get a canister filter set up for the tank

3)Keep the tank understocked, here we have a tendency to over stock tanks ...

4)Get API master test kit so you always know water parameters

5)Get seahchem prime , a great water conditioner that can be used in case of sudden ammonia spike and after water changes...

6)try and make the tank planted as plants are best bio filter and provide fish stress free surrounding ...

7)Use good amount of bio media in canister tank to avoid ammonia spikes ...

8)For planted tank you will need good soil(i use contro soil), good light and some fertiliser like seachem flourish , also if you can have c02 set up that will be great ..

Rajiv

Thanks for the suggestions
Definitely legitimate suggestions by the book

Although, as you can understand, it's difficult to do all those, specially for a beginner and for this small a tank.

Although i do think, 2 zebras are a bit overkill..

I definitely hope to get a MUCH bigger aquarium. Its more like a pilot project to see if everything goes decently.

Cheers.

I beg to differ here...canister, purigen nd kits will b little to excessive... There r much cheaper ways to keep a tank healthy... 2danios fr 28L is again extreme understocking...i think dat tank can hold 6-10zebra danios quite well..
