Overhead sump size and materials needed

Postby subha » Sun May 15, 2016 11:12 am

I m searching for a solution for my 110 gallon tank filtration..
Thinking about a overhead sump..
what should be the desired dimension for it.
what should be the flow rate.(thinking about 1800lph)
please suggest the sump size as well as the materials and building process..

is there any readymade top filter for this size.
The tank is going to house 15 angel fish,so flow of water must be considered.

WC- 50% / week

experts plz help...

Subha, Can you elaborate if you've already thought of some material for overhead sump. Also at what height you wish to keep the sump from the tank.
Normally for fish keepers, making a glass sump is easier. As far as size is concerned the bigger you make, the better.

Thanks for ur rply..

the overhead sump is going to sit on the bracing of the tank..so don't want to put too much pressure on that..
haven't decided about any perticular material..so any guidance on this will be highly appreciated. but i personally don't want to make it out of glass( because i can't arrange any place to drill the glass for plumbing purpose.

Plz give a simple disign..so that a lay man like me can understand... ;)

If your sump is going to rest above the tank walls, you can definitely go for glass. (Acrylic is an option too).
It couldn't be a big sump because of weight issues but lets call it a filter.
Wait let me draw some design for you.
Can I have the tank dimensions and glass thickness?

Here is a tentative design for Sump.

Image

The sump/filter is divided into six chambers / baffles.
The First one from where the water enters has 1 cm gap on top to avoid overflow in case the sump chokes. This and all other chambers can be filled with media of your choice. It has 3 cm gap at the bottom for water to move to second Chamber.
Second chamber's right side wall has a gap of 3 cm at top. Water enters this chamber from bottom, moves all the way up through media of your choice and finally moves to third chamber from the 3 cm gap at top.
Third chamber similarly has 2cm gap at top to avoid overflow and 3cm gap at bottom through its rear wall. Here water enters from top, Filters all the way and moves to fourth chamber through bottom.
Similar is the case for fourth and fifth chamber.
In the sixth chamber the front wall has 3 cm gap at top front pane to allow water flow back to tank.
Hope it is clear.

Thanks a ton for ur detailed reply..
yes, the explanation is clear to me..ur design speaks for itself..thanks again.
my tank dimensions are 5' * 1.5' *2.5'.
it is made of 12 mm glass.

ur design is really too good..but i m kind of afraid of putting too much load at one side of the tank.. i prefer some long chamber design.what should be the LBH of the sump chamber then?
i m thinking about using acrylic..where can i find it??
