180 gallon diy tank

Postby dev roy » Mon Nov 09, 2015 6:25 pm

Hi, I am going to make my dream tank. Due to dengue attack I am late to execute the plan. Here is the details

1. Dimension: 72*24*24
2.12 mm glass
3.Filter: Already have a 30*18*18 tank which will be use for sump. Diy pvc overflow.
4.this will be a open top tank.

I have some questions.. Before this tank I don't use any bracing. My question is if I use 12 mm glass so is it necessary to use both bottom and top braces or only top bracing is enough? What is the approximate price of 12mm extra clear glass?

Dev, I doubt if this iron stand will be able to support such a big tank + water(more than 1000Kg) for a long term.
Please take some expert advise on same.

follow my 200gal build in my signature.. that iron stand will collapse even before your tank is half full with water. 180 gal tank weighs no less than 1.5 ton with all the water, sand and rocks combined

its not only load bearing capacity but also longevity.. the iron stand may take on the load now but if you house a sump in there the saltwater vapour will make the iron rust away in less than two years.. make sure you make a very thick primer and waterproof colour coat on all the places.. else u will have a disaster

I am totally against putting such big tank on these racks.. These are book racks.. not meant for load. The Angles are perforated cast iron.. they will bend/break quickly and easily.. one side goes- whole tank goes.. crack crack boom boom.. if you had made a wielded steel frame then atleast you had some hope.
