DIY Algae Turf Scrubber (ATS)(Marine)

Postby xarg0n » Thu Sep 05, 2013 11:44 am

Well,

After researching for quite some time, an ATS is something I am currently after for my Marine tank. ATS has the ability to create natural ecosystem very close
to a reef in an aquarium. Now I had a big challenge from day one , that I do not have a sump, so the most simple ATS designs which actually
work in a sump cannot solve my purpose. Instead I am opting for a 3D ATS system, which has got its own enclosure to intake and out put tank water
independently. The advantage of this system is, one can use it as an overhead module to place above the tank, or can be used along a sump with
slight modification.

People who are still wondering about what an ATS is and its capabilities, let me explain briefly. In simplest form ATS consists of a media, some sort of
synthetic membrane which is rough enough to grow Turf Algae on it. Then this membrane is attached to a flow system via which water is flowed above the
media in presence of strong light, which grows turf algae on this membrane. Now while growing up , these Algae ( Mostly Hair Algae, brown / black algae are
also produced during the initial stage when Nutrient is too high) slowly consumes all the Inorganic NO3/PO4 and few organic PO4 as well. During this, a lot of
zooplankton like pods are produced within this algae membrane which gets back to main tank and later consumed by fish or corals similar to natural reefs.

By using ATS depending on the stocking, enormous hobbyists have been benefited and have been able to bring NO3/PO4 contents down to big fat 0. These
algae screens also produce more simpler forms of proteins and vitamins which helps corals to explode in the tank. All in all with an ATS you can say good bye to
all other filtration systems.

I will brief the materials you are going to need for this bulid later , but as of now just posting an image of the ATS container which is under development for this
project. I will also update this thread after the ATS becomes fully functional to demonstrate its potential.

I hear that Similar contraption can be used for FW, but not for Planted FW. a FW ATS will probably end up starving plants.

Pool da it exists. In fact Sourav da and i once discussed about it. The running cost may a bit high but if one could manage it its THE BEST you can get.

Rohan bro... why would the running cost be high compared to SW?

You got it wrong.

Marine tanks require good investment to be honest so the cost is bearable.

Compared to marine, normal freshwater tanks with low to medium budget will find it difficult to maintain it due to its electricity bill but still it can be optimized. And that was the only thing about which i talked with Mithun da too.

You are making this connection through a new pump?
Also, wont the overall temperature of the tank be increased?

Subhadeep

ATS alone can handle all the needs of a tank. I will be sunsetting my trickle and the same pump will be used for the ATS( in fact planning for another pump which I already have and less powerful than the Haelia). later I have a plan to sunsetting the skimmer as well, only thing is had I researched about it couple of months back I would not had to invest in a 13K skimmer. Anyways Skimmers can still be benificial in case I need to cycle new LRs or so..
Thanks & Regards..
