tests

Postby bunty123 » Sun Apr 20, 2014 11:52 am

So basically my tank is 50 litres and has been running for 6 months now with a damsel in it.i am planning to put in a clown.the main idea of creating this thread is to ask the experts about testing water.since it is a nano tank and atleast 6 months old (I know its too young) will checking ammonia, nitrite and ph per month suffice? And what if I experience changes in ammonia no2 and ph......please say the detailed and correct procedure as I couldnt find good info in the net.thanks in advance.

If its a fish only set-up, then periodic checking of NH3, NO2 & pH is enough with bi-weekly 10'/. or monthly 20'/. wc.

In case of sudden ammonia or nitrite spike a 20-30'/. wc is recomended and in case of low pH you need some buffering kit.
If you are running your tank with regular 2part dosing, there is a less chance of pH flactuation.
So, a tank without any inverts is not a headache to run with hardy fishes as dam or clown.

that falls under the fowlr category only.
how are the zoas doing in the heat?

2 part dosing is a cheap way to give supplements in a marine tank. Part A consists of Calcium dosing...which will lead to spread of coraline algae and part B is mainly the buffer solution to maintain the ph.

Creating it is very simple...but dosing the right amount is the only trick.

You can find some literature about two part dosing in the forum itself.

The polyps are all ok but no noticable spreading or new polyps but they are alive and thriving, damsel also doing great.....ok lets see if I can prepare the 2 part dosing....and so I can finally conclude that checking ammonia nitrite and ph per month is ok....but daily tests must be conducted during the detection of dosage of 2 parts...

@Bunty123 : bro diy: 2part dosing is not a matter of joke.

Many experianced aqurists even using Sodium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2] as direct source of Ca. But without thorough knowledge its highly dengerous. As it can couse massive pH flactuation.
2 part ca dosing preparation and perfect calculation of the strength of your solution (dl/ 100ml) or ppm strength needs various lab equipments. Except that you can't measure how much ppm Ca is present in 1ml of your made soln.

So better to start with a branded 2part kit.

Its not as easy as mix CaCl2 for Ca or Epsom salt for Mg in water and mix becking soda in another pot & my 2 part or 3 part is ready.

Be carefull.......

And lastly, b'fore you start dosing, you need a good Ca kit to measure the conc. of Ca in your tank water.
More than 480ppm Ca conc. also can couse many serious problems.

Good Luck...... :)
