The most important supplements for a marine aquarium are
1. Calcium
2. Magnesium
3. Strontium and
4. iodine

No really 3 & 4. There is no evidence what so ever that corals need Sr++. Sr++ just acts as a substitute ion for Ca++ because it is just there in the water and fits into the Aragonite Crystal lattice real nice. Unlike Ca++ and Mg++, Sr++ uptake is directly related to the concentration in the water. This is why geochemistry use it for studying pass climates. They measure the Sr++ in corals by drilling and taking core samples from the ocean floor. Chris Maupin, on FB, is an expert on this very subject. Most tanks tested already have to much "Iodine" and many as high a 10x to high. If one wants to sup either Sr++ or Iodine get a test kit, especially for Iodine. High Iodine can cause Crustacean to be driven into excessive molt cycles which kills them. Crustacean should get their Iodine from the food they eat not the water column. Old rule is: If you can not test for it you do not add it.
