About to start 4 feeter planted

Postby Abhinaba » Fri Jul 20, 2012 7:03 am

Hello everyone!!
Not sure how to start this thread because it's been long that I've been pondering on starting a planted, but never took the final plunge, sometimes due to fear of the maintenance and sometimes due to fear of losing the fish I have kept for a long time ( 3yrs on avg). But anyways, now I have taken the decision to give it a go !!
I'm a complete noob in this matter, so please bear with my stupid questions
After bugging Mr Gecho, Mr Tirtha, Mr Souvik, Mr Jayottam and some others, I have decided to start with below components (of course subject to availability)

Tank dimension : 4' X 2' (H) X 15" (W)
I know this is not the ideal dimension for a planted, but this is what I got :). I am not going to go for the cutting of glasses to reduce the height at this moment.
I mean I can go for cutting and all if that is absolutely necessary, but T5HOs should be able to penetrate 2' I suppose .

Light : 3 X 54Watt T5HO
I am trying to get a quad fixture for this. Thanks to Tirtha for showing me the Aquazonia one..
The fixture will have option of putting a 4th one, so I can do that as well if required.

Filtration
Eheim 2217. Do I need a PF?
Please suggest the flow rate for this dimension..

Substrate: Laterite + Soilrite and 3mm sand gravel on top of it
I have decided not to go for ADA amazonia due to cost  . If you guys think that I must go for this, then please convince me.
According to Buro da, Laterite and Morum are not the same thing. Please comment on this as well.

CO2: Pressurized
Gecho gave me a beginner's course on the components, but I am not sure I remember and understand everything.
Tirtha suggested reactor rather than diffuser due to ease of manitenance
What does the cylinder come with? Regulator comes with the cylinder or do I need to buy it?
I will do more research and ask more meaningful questions on this area.

Hardscape
I'll try to put some drifts. Gecho being my local guardian here, I'll let him decide what to do with the scape :)

Plants?
I like carpet (Who does not??) : Can HC be done? Java Moss on DW?
Midground : Anubias and ferns? What else can I do?
Background : No idea :?

Fertilizers
Macro : KNO3 and K2hPO4
Micro: CSM+B
Anything else?

So, I understand that when I start a planted, I have to plant it densely. So please suggest what should I start with initially..
Vals, Amazons etc?

Please correct/update/suggest based on your experience, not just from acquired info from net :geek: :D
Again, I'm sorry for so many questions in one post. It's almost like I'm thinking aloud.

Thanks in advance for your inputs.

Wah Wah...! Way to go Abhi da..
Seems that it will be a rocking setup, given your past tanks..
(given that it is such a large tank, it may require quite a lot of effort to maintain..)

Not sure, I am more inclined to learn how to grow plants than achieving a great scape. Tirtha was saying that his plants grow like 2" a day, now I'm not sure if I'm ready to handle that kind of growth..

Something is wrong with the source of water there :D :D :D...2" per day is huge in terms of plant growth. lol
i dont think normally we can achieve that growth spurge.
check with the planted gurus.

go for stems and a carpet on the front since you are using pressurized CO2..its doable and you'd get constant supervision from your local guardian there, so no chapz and welcome to the jungle

Best of luck dada for the planted and I will help u with whatever I can, but praying from heart that all plants in your tank will melt away after one year, and you come back to cichlids.

You can buy the cylinder from Arora, also the regulator (double gauge) are available there. I can explain you the different components of the system when we will meet this week. Do you want to control the CO2 and light by timer? Then you also need to buy solenoid, electrical way to on/off the co2 system. You need non return valve so that water can not enter the cylinder.

Please do not go for that river scape, please.

And as we discussed the tankmates will be cichlids, right. ;)

Avik

I always find when somebody starts planted tank, size and mainly height is the main factor!!!

I would say dont go for such huge tank first time, or else you my use LED or MH, not sure with the height dada!!! that too carpet plants!!!

Give a second thought!!!
