Lil confused to choose...:|

Postby Najib » Wed Jul 11, 2012 4:51 am

Hey guys.... Been reading some good posts and seen some nice setup and success in starting planted tanks.... I am a lil confused in knowing what to buy...

So here it is... Tank 30X17X24"... Plants I wanna grow Vals in the right and left background, Anubias, java fern, java moss & hair grass in the foreground....

I need black substrate... Which one should I buy
Ferts to be used
Std T5 2' enuf? No Idea on kelvins and stuff
CO2 required?

For filtration I have a Eheim 2217 which I can use.
Any more tips and suggestions most welcome....

Thanks all...
Najib

yup... 24" is the height... due to space constraint where i live now.... and want to increase the volume of water. the tank will be a temp home for ma bichirs as a Grow out... thus i chose the hardy plants...

more the height, less are the options of scaping. Trust me...you'd need more stem plants. More deep penetrating light too.

I don't think Polypterus and plants and co2 will go well. Bichirs dont dig plants but their robust sideways swimming action will have a detrimental effect on the plants, ripping them up unintentionally, especially Val's so i'll suggest anubia's, ferns etc on driftwood. Also they are likely to stir up substrate's like river soil, laterite etc keeping the water cloudy most of the time. I have experienced this although my ornatinpinnis was 12' plus when i attempted to house it in a planted tank. Since it's your first, i suggest a low tech planted setup (Google it). Co2 and ferts can be tricky for beginners. If not got right the results can be disastrous in fact.

Polys, plant & sand are the best combo, just have no idea on CO2 though thus the query. i have kept polys with plants the biggest fella being the 11" ornate never had a problem... that said, they can get very active and can uproot few plants... check these pic from a frnd James in MFK forum... he has large polys in there just love that look... wanna create something like that... since i am raising some babies that setup will make them very comfortable and make them come out more... ive grown Anubias, Fern and Amazon with just Plant Magic liquid fert, sand and T5 lamps didnt have problem with algae... but still dont wanna take a chance.... tried moss but the temperature just didnt match and the moss died...
