Cannot seem to get rid of ammonia, please guide

Postby rajivmemon » Thu Jan 19, 2017 5:15 am

Hi,

So yesterday i checked for ammonia in tank,it was .25(API master test kit), it has been like this for ever , that is why i switched to planted tank

I have a 29 gallong tank, with canister filter , i have 6 stems of hygrophila and 2 anubias and contro soil as substrate ...

My filter has bottom tray ceramic rings with purigen, middle tray with aquaclay balls, top tray with ceramic rings again...

I have now ordered 1L seachem matrix will add it to top tray in place of ceramic rings and put purigen on top tray instead of bottom...

Can you please guide why my tank is not getting cycled and was stuck earlier as well and now as well, even though i am now using canister filter, plants and soil substrate which many claim is a great place for beneficial bacteria to grow ...

Will seachem matrix make any difference ..

I have only 2 fish , one danio and one common gold fish (just 2 inch) ...

Any guidance will be appreciated ...

Thanks

Rajiv

In the bottom tray (ceramic rings + seachem purigen) in middle tray (aqua clay balls) in top tray ceramic rings once again, each tray has that foam which comes for filteration,

soon i will add 1L seachem matrix in top tray in place of ceramic rings..as i hear good things abt it on forums ...

Water is clear , i guess due to purigen , but contains ammonia and ammonia is like very toxic for fish even at minute level, i cannot seem to get rid of it ...

I checked my tap water and there is ammonia in there, i think that is why i always get 0.25 reading , also i always check just after water change , thinking the ammonia should be 0 but as the ammonia is in tap water it shows up ...

My tap water readings below

I will now add prime to make sure the levels remain low in my tank after water change ...
