nutritious and diy substrate for planting carpet plants

Postby el batty » Fri Jun 29, 2012 11:46 am

I have faced a huge peoblem in my 1st wave of planted...i used 2mm gravel that time and whenever i planted thin stem plants (HM for example) when the water flow was a little higher...they used to be uprooted.

now i will be totally using glosso and dhg...should i be using a thin layer (1mm) of construction sand to make it bind firmly?

dont want the dhg to float in the tank all over again :(

Bro i got success HM in large grained sand gravel sold in Galiff. No problem with faster flow. You could try to redirect the nozzle direction for some days until the HM gets properly rooted.

HM was past..am talking of glosso and parvula.

the thing is..the roots in glosso would be very very small...so if its loose...will there be a problem in floating away?

Oh missed it :P

Yes i too faced problems with glosso and EP :( some of them floated every alternate day and had to plant them again and again :(

But normal construction sand will be soon compact and may be damaging the delicate roots i think.isn't so?

i understand the concept of it but still 1st layer = lat+soil....2nd layer thick layer of 2mm (2" avg+) and 3rd construction sand...1mm to make it compact enough for holding the roots...if the plants start floating everyday..i am sure i will give up. :|

hence my query.

Thats what I've always heard but after seeing Rahul's tank I'm not so sure anymore.
Though he doesn't have glosso.

rahul is having parvula right?

prajjal da blew off the planet with construction sand..though he had many different layer of substrate below it. Still....lets see. in a 12" water depth, i dont think it would cause compacting of roots..still when everyone is against it, must be some reason :P
