New planted tank

Postby Sounak » Mon Mar 26, 2012 5:10 pm

I currently own a 5 gallon tank with 2 adult guppies and 8 fries (2 weeks old). I wish to convert this tank into a low-tech planted tank. I did quite some research on the net, but got extremely confused :? . I would be really grateful if someone could tell me what substrate and which plats i can keep. Prior thanks to all those who reply. :)

Sounak.... first of all, welcome to Kolkata Aquarium Club. We will try our level best to help you out.

Before we tell you what to do, tell us the size of the tank and what all the accessories you have like lights and filters.

I wrote a small article based on my own experience in my blog. If you find time, please go through it and post your questions.

Well, thanks Tirthada, your link was pretty compact and helpful. My 5 gallon tank at present has an under gravel filer with a output of 3.5L/min. I have a normal 6W CFL.

You will have lots of problem with UGF in a long run. With the present setup you can go with Anubias,Java ferns,Mosses(though you should avoid in this upcoming summer)

The first and only suggestion I will give, get a bigger tank (minimum 25-30G). 5G planted tank is not for beginners.

I'm planning to get a 29G tank. Dimensions would be 30''X15"X15". But first i wanted to try my hand in a smaller tank, and then move on to the large one.

You will face much more problems(Some serious ones including algae) in smaller tanks than in a larger one :)
