Spare Santamonica ATS

Postby jack » Fri Sep 23, 2016 11:14 pm

Hello

I am out of reefing these days and have a spare ATS with me from my older reef tank.

Anyone has experience using ATS in discus tank ?? Or matter of fact any freshwater tank ??

Is this helpful ?

Thank you

If your discus tank is planted/ semi-planted... then don't go for ATS.

If it's fish only then also there are conflicting opinions people have worldwide.
ATS and filter bacteria has somewhat symbiotic relationship that people believe.
Decaying algae adds carbon based nutrient leach in water column that encourages bacteria and may be sometime cause water quality to degrade w.r.t. keeping discus.

If there is ATS in sump then better not to use intense light in main display tank.

It's not like that it's impossible -- but you need to set up the balance in right manner! Nitrate control through ats reduces wc. But, gotta be sure by measuring with test kits, bcz many of the algae have tendency to prefer ammonia over nitrate!
Due to those many implications, IMO, most of the discus keepers keep it simple old school wc with a strong bio filter -- some go even bare bottom.
Though, semi-planted with ferns and anubias or black water biotope with thin layer of sandy substrate are in fashion now-a-days!
