Dow-Corning Silicon

Postby deep123 » Sun Apr 27, 2014 4:45 pm

Today went to galiff to get silicon for my new 3.5 feet tank. As said 'Dow-Corning' is good, so took 2 tubes of 'Dow-Corning' from the shop beside of Rano da. after coming home was just wondering with the tubes & suddenly saw on the other side of the tube its mentioned 'Do not use: in Aquarium" 'Total water immersion'.
Is 'Dow-Corning' not for Aquarium? Should I change it & take 130?
If its not for aquarium why they sale it in Aquarium Shop?
Thank god that have notice it before the tank build.

Yes it is mentioned in there.
Since it has no mould protection it can be used in aquariums. I have used this sealant in all my builds. So don't worry and ignore the message and continue with the build.

Good luck.

Dow Corning does not recommend any of its sealant for aquarium use.

Typical data index of a general purpose sealant would be
Tensile 20 to 25 MPA
Elongation 400 to 450 percent
Tear strength or bond strength 8 MPA

Generally the sealants which are recommended for Aquariums has
Tensile 25 to 30 MPA
Elongation of 900%
Tear strength of 15 MPA

Elongation plays an important role in sealants for construction of an aquarium

GE 2000 would serve your purpose, its cheap 140 or 130 mrp,
Better then Dow in terms of all technical aspects.

For a better one if not price conscious.

I got myself the Dow Corning one from eBay for about 280 Rs recently. I want to use this for my first DIY tank build (1x1x1). Do you suggest I use this or go for the GE one you mentioned?

Dow pretty much can work for smaller tanks, just make sure you don't get any air traps in your seams. GE2000 is better then Dow.
Both Dow and GE are general purpose caulks.
