Mbuna suggestions and help please

Postby kroyin » Fri Jan 23, 2015 2:13 pm

Hi everyone....

OK..I have decided to start an mbuna tank. This is what I have done till
now
---- Ordered aquarium (48x20x20) with iron stand

Which will hopefully be delivered in next 10-12 days

I am thinking on keeping the following (intend to buy 1.5 inch specimens)

---Yellow Lab (10)
---Acei (6)
---Socolofi (6)
---Demasoni (12)

Idea is to start off with 34-40 since I will loose some in balancing sexes, fights, diseases.

While I have gleaned numbers of cichlid sellers in the forum & going to galiff is also ok....

Can you guys let me know the following

----Reasonable prices for the above (1.5-2 inch)

-----Suggestion on things to look out for ...for example. In labs & ice blue
-----------black stripes on dorsal fin
-----------little or no banding
-----------black not red
eyes

I guess demasoni will be most difficult .Any trusted seller?

Thank you all

Krishnendu

What about the filter and the food and the rock work. Nice combination of fishes.

Filter as of now is dophin c1600. A HOB if needed later

One interesting thing that I found is dophin c1600 and cascade 1500 (plenty good reviews on amazon) are one and same (expect for colour). I checked up the dimensions ,number of trays ,,they are too much alike to be a coincidence :-B

Substrate I am mostly looking at black gravel (or) a 2:1 sand:gravel mixture ....it depends on the rock colour I end with

As per dolphin.co.za the rated is 2500 lph.

I'll definitely look at the Spilonotus (guess I will need 4)

Can help me with the prices ... I would like a baseline before I start buying

Congrats bro, the tank, specially the rocks or jhama look nice. The labs are of good quality.

It seems the tank leveling is not correct, the water level should be at the same height everywhere.

I think you pour the sand first, then the rocks..it should be the opposite. Otherwise, when the cichlids start digging, the rock structure may collapse. The left looks empty imo, put a couple more that side. Good that you broke the cave structures. Keep it that way, separated, so that a single fish can not claim the whole compound. The white colored rock in the center looks odd imo, can you place it in any other angle so that it matches the colors of the rest.

You can place another power filter or top filter in diagonally opposite position of the present filter.
Regards,

Avik

Avik... the floor it seems have a gentle slope :-), who knew ...will try to place wood pieces under the stand.

I actually put in a 1/4 inch of sand, placed rocks & then topped it up

About the flow .... i'm waiting for a dual head wavemaker/flowmaker.. lets see how that goes.

Good idea about the white rock & i have some North Bengal river rock in the pipeline for the left side
